Today was my second day of teaching and I think it went a little better than the first. I taught a different second grade class in the morning and was surprised at how different each class responded to the lesson. This new class was much quieter and better behaved than the one I am using for my edTPA lesson. The class was very easy to keep under control, however did not have as much spunk. I don't believe that I taught the lesson any differently, it was just that the class was entirely different which was very interesting to me.
With the second grade class in the after noon I moved onto the next step of the lesson. I began with a powerpoint discussing the color wheel, line, color, and shape. Next I demoed the students what they would be drawing in oil pastel; First draw the figure and instrument in pencil, then put an art shirt on to grab no more than five oil pastels, and finally continue to color the figure in and draw confetti around it using color, lines, and shapes. I found that the students listened a little bit better and I was able to have more control over the class because I moved the projector so I was always facing the class instead of having my back turned away from them at times. The students were fairly well behaved so I was able to play jazz music for them during work time. The students were incredibly excited and finished about half of the drawing, and I suggested more work with either line, color, or shape for the students who decided that they finished the project. About half of the project is done and the next lesson will include a review of color, line, and shape, the completion of their art piece, and a couple sentence reflection on jazz and the use of these particular principles of art that were taught in the lesson.
