Common Core Standards
  • What students are supposed to learn in english, language arts, and math at each grade level
  • Focus on core concepts and procedures starting in early grade levels
  • Standards are
    • research and evidence based
    • clear, consistent
    • aligned with college and career expectations
    • based on content and application of knowledge through thinking skills
    • built upon current state standards
    • preparing all students for success globally
  •  Changes in math and English
    • linking topics, etc
  • Implementation in schools
    • standards establish what students need to learn but do not dictate how teachers should teach
    • schools and teachers decide how to help students reach standards
    • not a part of No Child Left Behind or any other federal initiative
    • State adoption of the standards in not mandatory
    • Common Core is not a curriculum, it is a set of shared goals and expectations for what knowledge and skills help students succeed

  • Requirements
    • 2 SLO's written per year
    • Year 1 and 2 can be peer review
    • Year 3 must be approved, monitored, and scored by an evaluator
